

They can do nice master glue compression, aggressive drum bus compression (drum bus is where it really shines imo), or can ream a sound into a completely flat pancake for sound design purposes. Also, you don't want to use a limiter for "glue" compression because part of the vibe of glue compression is the gentle ratio and moderate attack/decay settings riding along the track keeping it somewhat in check dynamically but not totally.Īnyway the Waves and UAD API 2500 tend to be my go-to. Slow attack compression can be used to *increase* dynamic range on the start of a sound, and thus a compressor's output is not always reduced dynamic range, unlike a limiter. But you can't use a limiter to put bite on a sound that has insufficient initial transient energy like you can do with a slow attack on a compressor. You can do a lot with a limiter especially if you blend it with the dry signal for in-between states, which is very loosely like adjusting the ratio knob on a regular compressor with fast attack and release settings.
